Scaling the Funky Monkey

Welcome to Dashing Disciple.  A place to share about fitness, both physical and spiritual.

A few months ago while sitting in the car driving I was uncomfortable with the way my belly was hanging over my belt.  I felt this spare tire and decided it had to go.  I was winded when I did physical work, went up the stairs, or ran out to the mailbox.  So I started a diet and exercise program that has now morphed into doing vigorous exercise, paleo (most of the time) diet, running, participating in mud obstacle races, and 5K and 10K road races.  Recently I’ve added old fashioned bicycling (no speed bikes, just an old single speed; but that’s another blog), and swimming laps.  For a 59 year old guy I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been since college.

While running my  mind often turns to spiritual topics.  I’ve been raised in the church, am active in my local church, and always considered myself a “believer”.  Yet it seemed that something was just not complete.  While reading I Corinthians 9:24-27 it struck me:  “running aimlessly”.  The Apostle Paul often compares running and racing to our spiritual walk.  That was nothing new to me, but this struck me.  Despite all my head knowledge about God, the church, theology, etc. I was just running aimlessly.

Enter a new pastor and the introduction to a book.  While searching for a new pastor for our local church e interviewed a man that in no uncertain terms, and without hesitation, laid out his philosophy of discipleship and life.  He actually believed that we today could be disciple by Jesus, just as The Twelve had been.  Not only did he believe it, but lived it, and practiced it for all to see.  Through him I was introduced to a book, Disciples By Jesus, by author Hal Perkins.  And now things began to click.  Not only did it make sense, it completed my exercise and training program (more on that in a later blog as well).  Now it wasn’t aimless running, but point specific, daily discipleship by the Master Himself.

I hope you will come join me on this adventure of being disciple by the Master Himself, Jesus.  Now it won’t all be “spiritual”.  There will be blogs on exercise, running, training, nutrition, and lots of other topics as well.  But I find that often the principles of discipleship apply to physical training, and that at times physical training applies to spiritual discipleship.  Both require discipline and commitment.  Both can be fraught with potholes and failures as well.  We’ll explore it all so come join me will you?

Thanks for visiting and tell your friends!

  1. The phrase “running aimlessly” reminded me of a couple of things. First, it reminded me of the early 20th century French writer who said “a goal without a plan is just a wish”. This can be pondered both with spiritually or physically. Second, it reminded me of many thoughts I have had over my past 40 years of training and how focused I was when the prize was clear and how when the prize was not clear, I was “running aimlessly”.
